Abstract
Abstract
The essay intends to consider the link between capitalism and pandemic in contemporary times based on the shamanic epidemiology exposed by Davi Kopenawa Yanomami in The Falling Sky. This consideration operates in three movements: (i) the elucidation of the nexus between merchandise and epidemic in Yanomami cosmology; (ii) the contrastive comparison between the animistic concept and the materialistic concept of merchandise, in particular, regarding the nature of value; and (iii) an etiological hypothesis about the covid-19 pandemic, formulated based on the role that the revenge of shamanic spirits play in the Yanomami cataclysmology. In its conclusion, the essay compares Kopenawa’s thesis regarding the essentially pathogenic character of capitalism with Amerindian diagnoses formulated during the current pandemic
